That\u2019s caused many <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-jobs-openings-unemployment-inflation-federal-reserve-60b8f481cdbc56f96829817a2992e508\">to limit new work<\/a> to only a few specific roles, if not pause openings entirely. At the same time, sizable layoffs have continued to pile up \u2014 raising worker anxieties across sectors.<\/p>\n<p>Some companies have pointed to rising operational costs spanning from U.S. President Donald Trump\u2019s barrage of new <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/tariffs\">tariffs<\/a> and shifts in consumer spending. Others cite corporate restructuring more broadly \u2014 or are redirecting money to artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>Federal employees have encountered additional doses of uncertainty, impacting worker sentiment around the job market overall. Shortly after Trump returned to office at the start of the year, federal jobs were <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/doge-federal-job-cuts-congressional-districts-data-5d79e2a7ef2160166b0bee59dfa4e9e2\">cut by the thousands<\/a>. And the record <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/shutdown-republicans-schumer-health-insurance-tax-credits-a57733892f05a8893f5781203238e889\">43-day government shutdown<\/a> also left many <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/shutdown-senate-paychecks-trump-federal-workers-11088c71589297be2ce616525c582b13\">without paychecks<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The impasse put key economic data on hold, too. In a delayed report released last week, the Labor Department said U.S. employers <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/jobs-unemployment-economy-trump-tariff-bf603d63e13d6dc1083e9a6616c7ffee\">added a surprising 119,000 jobs<\/a> in September. But unemployment rose to 4.4% \u2014 and other troubling details emerged, including revisions showing the economy actually lost 4,000 jobs in August. The shutdown also resulted in holes for more recent hiring numbers. The government says it <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/october-jobs-report-delayed-federal-shutdown-df5739d6e6f0d4c8730f91de252022e1\">won\u2019t release<\/a> a full jobs report for October.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some of the largest job cuts announced recently:<\/p>\n<h4>HP<\/h4>\n<p>In November, HP said this week it expected to lay off between 4,000 and 6,000 employees. The cuts are part of a wider initiative from the computer maker to streamline operations, which includes adopting AI to increase productivity. The company aims to complete these actions by the end of the 2028 fiscal year.<\/p>\n<h4>Verizon<\/h4>\n<p>Also in November, Verizon began <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/verizon-layoffs-economy-jobs-1aa299fc28b8e7211188f9b084d1048c\">laying off more than 13,000 employees<\/a>. In a staff memo announcing the cuts, CEO Dan Schulman said that the telecommunications giant needed to simplify operations and \u201creorient\u201d the entire company.<\/p>\n<h4>General Motors<\/h4>\n<p>General Motors will <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/gm-layoffs-ev-battery-plants-30792ad41c5148fb5528a2d0bcc0b59b\">lay off about 1,700 workers<\/a> across manufacturing sites in Michigan and Ohio in late October, as the auto giant adjusts to slowing demand for <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/electric-vehicles\">electric vehicles<\/a>. Hundreds of additional employees are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/story\/business\/autos\/general-motors\/2025\/10\/29\/gm-cutting-hundreds-of-jobs-at-detroit-tennessee-ohio-ev-sites\/86962834007\/?gnt-cfr=1&amp;gca-cat=p&amp;gca-uir=true&amp;gca-epti=z118034p118950c118950e001900v118034b0030xxd003065&amp;gca-ft=168&amp;gca-ds=sophi\">reportedly<\/a> slated for \u201ctemporary layoffs\u201d at the start of next year.<\/p>\n<h4>Paramount<\/h4>\n<p>In long-awaited cuts just months after completing <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/paramount-skydance-media-cbs-trump-merger-a030c4f2c1903ed0e7f927782a64fcc0\">its $8 billion merger with Skydance<\/a>, Paramount plans to lay off about 2,000 employees \u2014 about 10% of its workforce. Paramount initiated <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/paramount-layoffs-skydance-merger-job-cuts-d98e6037d36254487112c833781b8f42\">roughly 1,000 of those layoffs<\/a> in late October, according to a source familiar with the matter.<\/p>\n<p>In November, Paramount also announced plans to eliminate 1,600 positions as part of divestitures of Televisi\u00f3n Federal in Argentina and Chilevision in Chile. And the company said another 600 employees had chosen voluntary severance packages as part of a coming push to return to the office full-time.<\/p>\n<h4>Amazon<\/h4>\n<p>Amazon said in October that it will <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/amazon-layoff-ai-14000-artificial-intelligence-cb64af47ebb794541fbdfa8fd264932c\">cut about 14,000 corporate jobs<\/a>, close to 4% of its workforce, as the online retail giant ramps up spending on AI while trimming costs elsewhere. A letter to employees said most workers would be given 90 days to look for a new position internally.<\/p>\n<h4>UPS<\/h4>\n<p>United Parcel Service <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ups-amazon-layoffs-turnaround-85afc1c459883f41a2283c8394ce1eaf\">has disclosed about 48,000 job cuts<\/a> this year as part of turnaround efforts, which arrive amid wider shifts in the company\u2019s shipping outputs. UPS also closed daily operations at 93 leased and owned buildings during the first nine months of this year.<\/p>\n<h4>Target<\/h4>\n<p>Target in October said it would <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/target-corporate-layoffs-minneapolis-india-f4d8100fa2bf4af67e4fb4e388cedf50\">eliminate about 1,800 corporate positions<\/a>, or about 8% of its corporate workforce globally. The retailer said the cuts were part of wider streamlining efforts.<\/p>\n<h4>Nestl\u00e9<\/h4>\n<p>In mid-October, Nestl\u00e9 said it would be <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/nestle-freixe-navratil-switzerland-purina-9de74ef338cdc95018cae859d5c8a332\">cutting 16,000 jobs globally<\/a> \u2014 as part of wider cost cutting aimed at reviving its financial performance amid headwinds like rising commodity costs and U.S. imposed <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ecb-lagarde-trump-tariffs-trade-b005c0c99547b6f3d08f4f6fa71d3cd2\">tariffs<\/a>. The Swiss food giant said the layoffs would take place over the next two years.<\/p>\n<h4>Lufthansa Group<\/h4>\n<p>In September, Lufthansa Group said it would shed 4,000 jobs by 2030 \u2014 pointing to the adoption of <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ai-therapy-ban-illinois-therabot-dfc5906b36fdd1fe8e8dbdb4970a45a7\">artificial intelligence<\/a>, digitalization and consolidating work among member airlines.<\/p>\n<h4>Novo Nordisk<\/h4>\n<p>Also in September, Danish pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/wegovy-novo-nordisk-ozempic-obesity-denmark-357fd9cbef29b324dfb059f35dc5ff6a\">said it would cut 9,000 jobs<\/a>, about 11% of its workforce. The company \u2014 which makes drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy \u2014 said the layoffs were part of wider restructuring, as it works to sell more obesity and diabetes medications amid rising competition.<\/p>\n<h4>ConocoPhillips<\/h4>\n<p>Oil giant ConocoPhillips announced plans in September to <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/conocophillips-layoffs-job-cuts-2025-f35528aad7d8c02895853d73bb12842e\">lay off up to a quarter of its workforce<\/a>, as part of broader efforts from the company to cut costs. Between 2,600 and 3,250 workers were expected to be impacted, with most layoffs set to take place before the end of 2025.<\/p>\n<h4>Intel<\/h4>\n<p>Intel has moved to shed thousands of jobs \u2014 with the struggling chipmaker working to revive its business. In July, CEO Lip-Bu Tan said Intel expected to <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/intel-chips-layoffs-a3a83e4bb8cd71e2615e964b432dd37f\">end the year with 75,000 \u201ccore\u201d workers<\/a>, excluding subsidiaries, through layoffs and attrition. That\u2019s down from 99,500 core employees reported the end of last year. The company previously announced a <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/intel-chip-ai-job-cuts-layoffs-loss-e61781e9364b69af63481c34ca5dcd67\">15% workforce reduction<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4>Microsoft<\/h4>\n<p>In May, Microsoft <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/microsoft-layoffs-d1f2de54ebad6f099deac8fbd3375835\">began laying off about 6,000 workers<\/a> across its workforce. And just months later, the tech giant said it would be <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/microsoft-layoffs-xbox-f44079957b12370f72e24edebe9fcc6b\">cutting 9,000 positions<\/a> \u2014 marking its biggest round of layoffs seen in more than two years. The company has cited \u201corganizational changes,\u201d but the labor reductions also arrive as the company spends heavily on AI.<\/p>\n<h4>Procter &amp; Gamble<\/h4>\n<p>In June, Procter &amp; Gamble said it would <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/procter-gamble-jobs-tariff-cff3724e3c0a82408d3fbb0266014559\">cut up to 7,000 jobs<\/a> over the next two years, 6% of the company\u2019s global workforce.
